At the start of each new year, we get a fresh start. New year resolutions can help us improve over the year before by helping us make positive changes. Do you have resolutions yet? If not, here are 10 easy ones if you resolve to helping others in 2021 

Resolutions for helping others


  1. Volunteer – Helping others is always a plus. Volunteering not only provides fun and makes you feel better, it can also connect you with other people like you. All while helping a good cause. Go to Google and type in “where can I volunteer near me.” You’ll get plenty of results for things that you can do.
  2. Donate clothes you never wear anymore – If you get attached to your things, this one could be tough. But believe us when we say, you won’t miss them. Not sure where to take them to really help others? Here’s a little help from Good Housekeeping.
  3. Write Thank You notes – Thanking someone will make them feel appreciated. Taking the time to write out a note shows you really appreciate them. If you don’t know what to say in your card, Hallmark has you covered.
  4. Stop talking and listen, listen, listen! – More than anything in the world, people want to be heard. So listen to them. See what a difference it makes.
  5. Do random acts of kindness at your pace – You don’t have to do something everyday (although that would be really cool). But here and there, for no reason at all, you can be a hero to someone who may need some cheer. And February 17 is National Random Acts of Kindness Day.
  6. Call or FaceTime friends or family instead of texting – Remember when video phones were a thing of the future and we were all paying long distance charges to talk on the phone? Well, the future is here So reach out, reach out and touch someone. Or Zoom…or FaceTime if you can. You have no excuses.
  7. Let go of grudges and hate –Holding on to hatred and anger “is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die.” This quote has been attributed to many people, including Buddha. Whoever came up with the phrase is absolutely right though. Holding on to anger can have negative effects on your health, so let that stuff go!
  8. Give blood – If you can’t donate money or volunteer to make a difference, try giving some of your blood to a stranger. That’s the ultimate donation! https://www.redcrossblood.org/
  9. Check in on your neighbors who live alone or are isolated – Yes, we’re supposed to avoid people during the pandemic. But depression is a serious illness that affects many people, and it can get worse with forced isolation. Even a text here would be okay.
  10. Pay it Forward – A random stranger does something nice for you. In return, you do something nice for another random stranger. That’s paying it forward. Just don’t be the guy who broke the chain.
